To legalise and legally recognise consenting adult plural marriage.
We, the undersigned, are adults of faith living in the United States. Many of us hold, as a matter of sincere religious conviction, that a household of one husband and more than one wife is a lawful and honourable way of life — the pattern of Abraham, Jacob, Elkanah and David.
Today that conviction carries a legal penalty. Plural households across the country live without marriage licences, without inheritance protection, without spousal medical authority, and in several states under the shadow of criminal statutes. Adults who harm no one are pushed into secrecy, and secrecy is exactly the condition in which real abuse hides.
We therefore respectfully ask Congress to act so that consenting adults may form plural marriages openly, and so that the families and children of those households are not left outside the law.
Repeal federal support for state bigamy and cohabitation statutes that make a religious plural household a crime, even when every adult in it consents and no fraud is involved.
Create a lawful framework so plural families can hold property, name beneficiaries, make medical decisions and parent their children with the same clarity other families rely on.
Keep every existing protection against coercion, underage marriage, fraud and trafficking. Our request is for consenting adults only — prosecuting abuse and prosecuting belief are not the same thing.
